OVERVIEW

Like its higher end cousin the Samsung JS9500 and its budget-oriented cousin the JS8500, the JS9000 is a member of the SUHD line of 2015 4K TVs, Samsung’s flagship televisions for the near future.

Additionally, like its two cousins, this 4K TV offers some of the newest and most revolutionary technologies Samsung has yet emerged with. Most importantly of all, the much vaunted and genuinely impressive quantum dot technology of color enhancing nano-crystals built into the screen and a completely revamped Tizen OS for smart TVs are key features of the JS9000.

On the other hand, this model, like the JS8500 doesn’t come with the Peak Illuminator Ultimate HDR-ready technology of its top-shelf cousin the JS9500. Thus, for those of you who are thinking of buying a Samsung SUHD TV because you want to have a 4K TV that’s ready for the next generation of content with High Dynamic Range, the JS9000 is not your TV of choice. It doesn’t even come with full-array LED backlighting.

THE GOOD

While the nano-crystal quantum dot/DPI P3 color enhancement is the same between the JS9000 and the cheaper JS8500, this particular, and pricier, line of UHD TVs also features additional goodies like a slightly superior Motion Rate 240 refresh rate technology, a Smart TV platform that’s powered by an Octa-Core Processor instead of just the weaker Quad-Core engine of the JS8500 and a full-blown, futureproof One Connect box that gives you access to external connectivity features for all your audio and 4k video needs. Best of all, the One Connect box can be replaced as new connectivity and codec options emerge without having to replace the JS9000 itself.

The single best feature of the JS9000, however, is the one it shares with all of its SUHD cousins. This is the Nano-crystal quantum dot technology. As we’re going to cover more thoroughly under visual specs, a film of light dispersing nano-crystals that augment the color created by the TVs existing LEDs, LCDs and pixels to levels that are definitely more notable in comparison to those of any ordinary 4K TV. Nano Crystal color is at least as good as the Triluminous Display technology of Sony’s 4K TVs, and quite possibly even a superior performer.

Furthermore, and this is another trait that the JS9000 shares with all of its SUHD cousins, there is the addition of a new and revamped Tizen OS, which surrounds the usual Smasung Smart Hub smart TV platform. With much faster and more refined search/usability features, the Tizen OS is a definite improvement from the OS of last year’s Samsung 4K TVs.

THE BAD

The JS9000, like the rest of its SUHD cousins, is one absolutely fantastic and highly advanced 4K UHD TV. However, relative to higher end models in the same line, it does have a couple of notable “defects”.

Most glaring of all is the lack of full-array LED backlighting. This crucial feature of HDR-compatibility and much more precise local dimming for sharper dark levels has been reserved strictly for the more expensive JS9500 and it’s a shame that Samsung couldn’t at least include it in the still pricey JS9000. Even Vizio managed to install high quality full array backlighting in its ridiculously affordable 4K TVs and Samsung could certainly manage the same, even if they don’t also decide to offer HDR-readiness via their Peak Illuminator Ultimate technology that the JS9500 has.

Finally, there is also the curved screen design.. While it certainly looks nice and doesn’t take anything away from the TV’s overall quality, it’s also hardly the “immersive experience” that Samsung likes to make it out to be. In fact, it’s more of a gimmick than anything, especially on a TV screen that’s not more than 80 inches across. Worst of all, we suspect that it’s at least partly responsible for a higher retail price, and needlessly so.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Make no mistake about it, the JS9000 series of 4K UHD TVs is nothing short of superb. Despite their minor deficiencies in comparison to their more expensive counterparts in the SUHD lineup, these 4K models are some of the best home entertainment systems on sale today from any brand and the color gamut they offer is nothing less than exquisite.

HIGHLIGHTS

The most interesting and “revolutionary” characteristic of the JS9000 is the Nano-Crystal color augmentation technology it shares with its other SUHD cousins. This has been developed thanks to the quantum dot research that Samsung has been busy with for at least a few years now and the results have paid off beautifully. The company first built a superior color spectrum technology into their TV pixels.

This, known as DCI P3, basically enhances the ordinary color palette released by the TV pixels as they pass LED light through them. And then to top this improvement up even further, the light from the JS9000’s LEDs is also passed through an extremely thin film that’s covered with molecule-sized semiconducting nano-crystals that generate different colors as light passes through them, depending on the specific shape of each crystal. The overall effect is an even further broadening of the color palette. On the screen, this translates to color gamut, vibrancy and saturation that create spectacular depth and realism of a kind no normal LED/LCD 4K TV can match.

Then there is the Tizen OS that has been built into all of Samsung’s SUHD TVs for 2015. This newly revamped and optimized operating system is not only much faster and more intuitive than previous versions, it’s also great in how it lets you save off programs or movies at a certain point and come back to watch them from there again, later without having to fast forward.

Things are helped along even more by features like voice search and Samsung’s proprietary S-Recommendation engine, which learns to follow your viewing and browsing preferences for better search recommendations in the future. Furthermore, the Tizen OS features the Samsung Smart Hub with its streamlined access to thousands of web apps and full internet browsing functionality.

Another highlight we need to mention is the enhanced contrast ratio of the SUHD TVs. The absolute best of this is found only in the JS9500, which features full-array LED backlighting and a brightness technology called Peak Illuminator ULTIMATE. These two combined are largely what give this top TV in the SUH line its HDR-readiness for the next generation of 4K content.

The JS9000 unfortunately doesn’t have this same technology but it does still offer better than average dynamic range thanks to a mix of particularly strong edge-lit LED lighting and very solid dimming technology for dark spots on the screen. The two are going to be described in more detail below but suffice to say that they do create a contrast ratio which is more than great for most viewer’s eyes, as described in the image below, comparing ordinary dynamic range, Peak Illuminator Pro and Peak Illuminator Ultimate.

VISUAL SPECS

The visual specs on this particular Samsung line of SUHD TVs are definitely impressive. Not as good as the best of the SUHD TVs but for this price, you still get your hands on one of the best 4K displays available today. The JS9000 easily competes with the latest mid-level 4K TVs from Sony and even LG in certain ways. While no, it’s not as good at creating contrast as LG’s OLED TVs it definitely gives them a hard run for their money in terms of color gamut and brightness.

While the JS9000 line doesn’t offer full-array LED lighting and thus isn’t fully HDR capable like its more expensive 9500 counterpart, Samsung’s LED technology is exceptionally luminous and even the edge-lit LED array on this TV gives you some excellent brilliance in the form of its Peak Illuminator PRO light enhancement technology.

Furthermore, what Samsung calls UHD dimming provides for the necessary darker spots on the screen. In this, you’re definitely not getting the contrast quality of the full-array local dimming found on the JS9500 or many other 4K TVs with HDR-readiness but the overall effect is certainly great in the JS9000 too.

Also, and most importantly of all, the JS9000 offers the same exceptional, expanded color gamut as even the best SUHD TVs we’ve reviewed. When it comes to Nano-Crystal quantum dot color enhancement, Samsung apparently didn’t shirk on any of its SUHD models and the result is very noticeable. This TV really saturates its on-screen content with brilliant, vibrant and highly varied colors, creating an excellent level of realism.

Finally, the Octa-Cor processor and ClearMotion 240 refresh rate work together to create a smoothness of motion that is more than good enough for even the most fast paced action scenes in ultra HD movies, games and TV shows. While some people have complained about ClearMotion technology’s tendency to create a sort of bizarre visual experience in movies, it is a very useful technology when it comes to sportscasts.

CONNECTIVITY

Like all other 2015 Samsung 4K UHD TVs, the JS9000 line delivers a perfectly complete connectivity package for enjoying all that’s available in terms of Ultra HD, HD and web content.

Video compression technologies like HEVC and VP9 let you view anything streamed to your TV in 4K from Netflix, Amazon Prime Instant Video or other sources and HDCP 2.2 content copy protection makes sure that ultra HD content delivered via set-top boxes and VOD is fully accessible without fear of it being cut off for security reasons.

Furthermore, the JS9000 offers several HDMI 2.0 ports, 3 USB ports, full internet connectivity via WiFi and Ethernet and best of all, it offers compatibility with the external (and thus replaceable) Samsung One Connect Box, which the company has designed to future proof its TVs as connectivity technologies advance and change.

PRICING

The JS9000 is the mid-level option among the SUHD line of TVs, meaning that it’s not as “affordable” as the JS8500 but also nowhere near as expensive as the top-shelf Full-array JS9500. Thus, the 65 inch model is retailing on Amazon for $3,497 and the 48 and 55 inch models are going for $1,997 and $2,497 respectively.

NOT SO GREAT

We’ve already covered the less than ideal aspects of the JS9000 above but to quickly summarize them:
This TV really could have been made with full array LED backlighting. The edge-lit LED array and Peak Illuminator PRO technology do wonders for the dynamic range of this line of TVs but full-array LED backlighting wouldn’t have killed Samsung for this price.

Furthermore, the curved screen doesn’t really add anything extra to the overall viewing experience. None of these models are anywhere near large enough to make it worthwhile and while it looks cool, it mostly seems like something of a gimmick that might be contributing to price tag which is unusually high considering how few differences there are between the JS9000 and flat-screen JS8500.

If you want an excellent, modern 4K TV with some of the best color reproduction around, this is a great choice, but you could also just as easily buy the considerably cheaper Samsung JS8500 and still get virtually all of the same features and lose only a bit in terms of sound quality and processing power.

   Last year, LG’s EC9600 stood out as the finest TV we’d seen up until that point. Its picture quality was nothing short of stunning, and as the first UHD OLED, it was easy to bestow high honors upon it. In fact, it stands to this day as the first and only television to receive a 10-point rating from us. So how do you follow that up?
   LG faced that unenviable task this year, and the product of its efforts is the EG9600 series, the company’s flagship 4K UHD OLED for 2015. New for this year is WebOS 2.0, an update to LG’s already outstanding operating system/smart TV platform, a slightly different physical design, a new Magic Motion remote, and an anti-glare coating for the TV’s panel. Also, there’s one less HDMI input (what?!?).
   And then there’s the price: The 65-inch EG9600 model has been introduced at $9,000 — that’s down $3,000 from prior year, but still a hefty chunk of change. Ultimately, that figure will go down later this year, meaning that the EG9600 will be the least expensive premium UHD OLED we’ve seen yet. Even if it is still outlandishly expensive for a TV.
   Of course, as the only major manufacturer producing OLED TVs, LG doesn’t have any real competition in the OLED market, so there is little incentive to drop prices. In fact, as OLED adoption is still very slow, the company has to foot the bill as it invests a tremendous amount of capital into research, development, and production. So the fact that the price is dropping at all is an indication that LG really, really, wants you to get into OLED.
   Frankly, we think that’s a pretty good idea ourselves. OLED has tremendous potential, and it doesn’t suffer some of the maladies that LCD-based TVs do, which makes it a great replacement for the now-departed plasma TV. But the technology still needs some work. As you’ll see in our video review, while the EG9600’s picture is outstanding in nearly every way, it does exhibit a couple of key weaknesses. More work must be done until OLED can be called the holy grail of display technology, and that work will require time, effort, and, yes, money.
   The EG9600 will reward those who invest in it with the most impressive picture quality out there. While Samsung, Panasonic, and Sony have all made huge strides toward improving their LCD-based LED TVs, OLED still rules with its perfect black levels, exceptional brightness, and vibrant colors. There’s just one problem, and it could be a big one for some viewers. There’s a sort of flashing effect that comes along with some judder on this set, and it’s especially prevalent if you don’t make some settings changes. We’ve got full instructions on how to fix it.
