Ultra HD Blu-ray is bringing high-res movies home soon (eng)

After Blu-ray and HD DVD ushered in the age of HD and 1080p movies for the masses, discs were beaten to 4K by streaming services like Netflix, YouTube and Amazon. While the internet is still doing most of the heavy lifting for 4K, the Ultra HD Blu-ray specification is finally complete which means we should see movies and players arriving later this year. Besides being compatible with the 10,000~ Blu-ray discs already out, Ultra HD Blu-ray players will be ready for high-res 3,840 x 2,160 video, "next generation object-based sound formats" (think DTS: X and Dolby Atmos), more colors, high dynamic range (HDR) and even high frame rate video. That's a lot of buzzwords to say movies will have the capability to look and sound better at your home than they ever have before. The BDA also made vague reference to a "digital bridge" setup for extending your movie purchased on a disc to other devices like phones and tablets, but didn't say exactly how that will work, or if it's going to be any better than Ultraviolet.

The discs themselves are upgraded too, ready to hold 66GB or 100GB of data, up from the 25GB/50GB size of the current Blu-ray spec. According to the association licensing is expected to start this summer, and Samsung already announced it plans to release a player later this year. Hopefully, whatever it produces is better (and cheaper) than the slow, glitchy $1,000 BD-P1000 that kicked off the Blu-ray era years ago. Panasonic showed off a demo player at CES this year, and we're sure other manufacturers will follow suit.

For people looking to future proof their setup, the new crop of Ultra HD TVs hitting shelves this year have support for the high-res video, plus HDR color, but they may need to support a new HDMI 2.0a standard to get the most out of new discs. There's still a few more questions than answers about the rollout of 4K content, but as the picture clears up over the summer and into the holidays, we should have more information.

Avem pe piaţă de mai mulţi ani televizoare UHD, capabile să redea conţinut în rezoluţie de patru ori mai mare decât generaţiile precedente. Totuşi, există în continuare o mare lipsă de conţinut pentru aceste display-uri, iar eforturile serviciilor de streaming pentru a aduce astfel de clipuri în casele utilizatorilor nu au fost de ajuns. Limitarea vine din partea conexiunilor la internet ale ţărilor vestice, incapabile să redea fluxuri de conţinut 4K/UHD din cloud. Astfel, ne întoarcem la suport fizic, iar Ultra HD Blu-Ray pare să fie următorul standard pentru vizionarea filmelor acasă.

Se pare că standardul Ultra HD Blu-Ray a fost în sfârşit finalizat. Anunţul a fost făcut de Blu-Ray Disc Association, o organizaţie formată din cele mai importante companii producătoare de produse electronice şi conţinut video precum Sony, Warner Bros, Disney, Toshiba, Microsoft, Hitachi, Intel, Philips, LG, Samsung şi multe altele. Spre diferenţă de tranziţia de la DVD la suport pentru conţinut HD, nu va mai exista rivalitate între două formate. Întrucât HD DVD a avut parte de un eşec colosal în faţa discurilor Blu-Ray, nimeni nu mai doreşte să concureze cu noul Ultra HD Blu-Ray.

Conform specificaţiilor finale, noile disc-uri vor putea stoca aproape de trei ori mai multe date decât vechiul format Blu-Ray. Discurile pe un singur strat vor oferi 66 GB de spaţiu de stocare, iar cele cu două straturi vor beneficia de 100 GB de spaţiu de stocare. Deşi modele cu trei straturi sunt amintite, nu a fost dezvăluită capacitatea pe care acestea o vor avea. Beneficiile noilor discuri sunt evident posibilitatea de a stoca filme în format UHD (rezoluţie 3840 x 2160 pixeli), alături de câteva îmbunătăţiri.

Spaţiul în plus şi noile capabilităţi ale echipamentelor de redare video vor oferi acces la formate de sunet de nouă generaţie precum DS: X şi Dolby Atmos, redarea unei palete mai mari culori, dynamic range mai bun, cât şi redare a filmelor la frecvenţă a cadrelor mai mare. Au fost amintite şi capabilităţi precum „digital bridge”, care ar putea garanta accesul la filmul de pe disc de pe alte dispozitive în format digital (precum tablete şi telefoane).

Pentru redarea noului format de discuri vor fi necesare noi dispozitive, precum playere Ultra HD Blu-Ray de generaţie nouă. Acestea vor fi compatibile cu vechiul format Blu-Ray şi vor fi compatibile cu standardul HDMI 2.0a. Momentan nu au fost anunţate playere, însă vom afla mai multe detalii din partea Bly-Ray Disc Association în lunile care urmează.
